The VNUS Closure® procedure is a minimally invasive outpatient treatment for varicose veins. An alterative to traditional vein stripping surgery, the procedure treats the underlying cause - venous reflux, a painful leg condition that causes discomfort, swelling and the appearance of varicose veins.
Using ultrasound, Dr. Hochberg will position a tiny catheter that delivers radiofrequency (RF) energy into the diseased vein through a small opening in the skin. The RF energy causes the vein wall to heat, collapse and seal shut. Once the diseased vein is closed, blood flow is re-routed to other healthy veins.
Following the procedure, a bandage is placed over the insertion site and additional compression may be provided to aid healing. The procedure involves little or no pain, allowing patients to walk away and resume everyday activities typically within a day. Most patients report minimal or no scarring, bruising or swelling after the procedure.
The treatment takes less than an hour and provides immediate relief of many symptoms. Most patients report a noticeable improvement in their symptoms within 1-2 weeks following the procedure.
